Maintaining your Nib 101
The number one thing you need to know about your nibs is that they come with an oil coating from the manufacturers to add a shine to the nibs as well as to keep them from rusting. We need to be sure to remove this oil coating because the ink will not hold in the nib. Please note that this is only done once before your first use!
There are several ways to remove the oil coating, using potato is very easy and a method used often by calligraphers. You can also use the flame of a candlestick to do the same. I have used a lighter in the video because I didn’t have access to a candle but using a candle is recommended. Alternatively, you can also apply toothpaste to your nib!
Watch this video and learn how to prep your nibs before using it for the first time!
Another important fact is that your nibs will rust eventually, they have a shelf life anywhere between a month or three months depending on how you maintain them. Ideally, after every use please wash your nibs, wipe them using a dry cloth or tissue and store them in an airtight container. Reducing the exposure of the nibs to moisture is the only way to increase the shelf life!
I hope this blogpost helped, we will soon be learning the pros and cons of the various nib types, stay tuned!
